The Aikenhead Centre for Medical Discovery (ACMD) is entering its next phase, shifting from completion to activation, as people, projects and daily activity begin to define the building.
A major milestone in this transition is the official opening of the St Vincent’s Clinical School within ACMD, marking the arrival of a new generation of clinicians learning in an environment designed for collaboration from day one.
Over recent weeks, the Centre has welcomed a significant influx of clinicians, researchers, students and professional staff, with nearly 300 people now inducted and working across the facility. This growing community reflects the collaborative model ACMD was designed to support – bringing disciplines together in a shared environment to accelerate translation and real-world impact.
A daily rhythm begins
A visible sign of this momentum is the opening of Harley & Doyle on the ground floor. Now serving hot beverages from 8:00am – 11:00am (with full service to follow), the café is already becoming a natural meeting point – supporting the informal interactions that underpin collaboration.
These everyday moments – coffee catchups, chance conversations, quick exchanges between clinicians and engineers – are a critical part of how ideas move forward inside ACMD.
Spaces taking shape
At the same time, the building continues to evolve physically.
Level 7 fit-out is now well underway, progressing the next stage of specialist spaces that will support research, collaboration and translational activity.
This staged activation reflects the deliberate approach to commissioning the building = ensuring spaces are brought online in step with partner needs, programs and occupancy.
From building to living laboratory
With the Clinical School now active, a growing cohort of users on site, and new spaces coming online, ACMD is rapidly becoming what it was designed to be: a place where clinicians, engineers, researchers and industry work side-by-side.
What was once a construction project is now a functioning environment – one where capability, connection and curiosity intersect every day.
